With scholarship opportunities becoming more competitive, students who are members of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), Midland College's honor society, can more readily compete for such scholarships, according to Ed Penz, faculty advisor.
Members can compete for scholarships including $37 million in transfer scholarships offered by more than 700 colleges and universities.
PTK offers $130,000 in scholarships. Members of the society receive automatic inclusion in CollegeFish.org, Phi Theta Kappa's comprehensive transfer planning program and letters of recommendation sent to college admission counselors.
The society also offers Five Star Competitive Edge, a professional development plan to enhance leadership, communications, critical thinking and team-building skills, according to Penz.
PTK is the only honor society serving institutions that offer associate degree programs.
In order for students to be inducted into the society they must first meet certain requirements. Students must have a 3.5 GPA or above, more than 12 semester hours, must take courses applicable to an associate's degree and pay a $65 membership fee. Although community service is encouraged, it is not required, Penz said.
Students are not just inducted as freshman but also have the possibility to be inducted as sophomores and juniors. After the initial induction, students do not have to maintain a certain GPA until they graduate, according to Penz.
"Students receive a certificate suitable for framing, a lapel pin, a notation on their permanent transcript and may wear a golden stole with their graduation regalia once they are inducted into the society," Penz said.
Although the society was dormant last year, there are currently 73 students enrolled. Induction will be held later this spring, according to Penz.
